Regarding AY2019 Graduation and AY2020 Entrance Ceremonies

March 3rd, 2020
Takano Katsumi,
President of Tokyo University of Agriculture

On March 3rd, in light of the situation regarding the Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19), Tokyo University of Agriculture decided to cancel this academic year’s graduation ceremonies and 2020 academic year’s entrance ceremonies. It is with deep regret that we have to make this announcement.
Graduation ceremony, when students depart for a new world.
Entrance ceremony, when the new first-year students enter their new home.
Students and their families, and us, faculty and staff, all look forward to both of these events to share the excitement and joy with one another.
There are many aspects of COVID-19 that remain unknown, but as you already know, experts found that most of the COVID-19 infections were spread in a closed environment where the air tends to be stagnant. We must avoid at all costs any potential of infecting our precious students who will be starting a new chapter of their lives.
After a careful consideration, we made this unprecedented and difficult decision of cancelling both the graduation and entrance ceremonies.
The graduation ceremonies are special moments to honor the achievements of our undergraduate and graduate students. Thinking about how we cannot celebrate your accomplishments and how devastated you may be, it truly breaks my heart. As a representative of faculty and staff, I would like to sincerely apologize for having to make this agonizing decision.

Throughout your time at Tokyo NODAI, all of you practiced the philosophy of “practical learning” and studied the way for supporting “life”. The spread of COVID-19 is an exact example of what threatens our efforts. As the founder of our university, Enomoto Takeaki, advocated, I strongly wish for you to carry the spirit of science and the heart to challenge to overcome such obstacles and to start a steady voyage of your new lives.

Lastly, I would like to kindly request students’ families and friends for your understanding and support regarding this matter.
