In present-day Japan, while urban areas continue to develop, regional communities are facing various issues including depopulation. However, regional communities still have resources lying idle. Students in the department engage in studies linked with various industries in the Abashiri region (in north-eastern Hokkaido), in order to discover the potential of those resources and investigate social development approaches that different from those in the city.
