Farming Systems Team

1. Conduct socio-economic analysis of new bio-agents and technologies developed by other teams, based on field trials. The field experiments are designed to function as demonstration plots of new agents and technologies. A series of questionnaire surveys are conducted to examine the impact of the experiments on farmers, in order to clarify the process of dissemination and adoption of new agents and technologies. The research sites are the following:

Van Noi Commune, Hanoi (Vietnam)
Candi Kuning, Tabanang, Buri (Indonesia)
Pucara, Huancayo (Peru)
Tambon Bang Plama, Suphan Buri (Thailand)
Abashiri, Hokkaido (Japan)
Joetsu, Niigata (Japan)

2. Conduct supplementary questionnaire surveys in Peru, at both villages of Chancayllo and Pucara, in order to obtain farm management and farming systems data. These enable the construction of typical farming system models in the following areas:

Chancayllo and Pucara (Peru)
Candi Kuning and Rancaudik (Indonesia)
Van Noi (Vietnam)
Abashiri, Hokkaido and Joetsu, Niigata (Japan)

3. Conduct a questionnaire survey of rice and vegetable farmers in Suphan Buri, Central Thailand, in order to clarify technological and economic differences of conventional farming and organic farming with the use of new bio-agents.


4. Convert conventional farms to organic farms, and monitor the process of transformation from the viewpoints of soil fertility, pests, diseases, and weeds. This is currently pursued in Joetsu, Niigata for rice and vegetables with cooperation of farmer-practitioners. Newly developed agents and technologies are being incorporated in the experiments.
