Field of Environmental Planning and Design

Landscape Policy Studies | Study the nature of amenity space and landscape

We study environmental policies from the landscaping perspective to create a rich environment abundant with nature. We aim to investigate and study specific policies related to the truly ideal environment and landscape for humans, to reflect our relationship with nature, land, and landscape. On the basic subjects of Principles of Landscape Architecture and History of Landscaping, we look at social science perspectives such as the theories of amenity, scenery and green policies, and seek to understand the human relationship with nature.

Garden Design | Look at a familiar environment from a gardening perspective

"Garden" originally means to introduce natural grass, flowers, trees, soil, water into a familiar space, and to construct a more human-like lifestyle. Our laboratory explores the ways for future garden design: (1) in the scope of "Garden Studies", by finding a suitable living environment for a modern lifestyle by considering people's needs and by approaching the principles of garden structures through field investigation work; (2) in the scope of “History of Landscaping,” by learning the forms, patterns, and history of gardens worldwide, each of which reflects the climate, land, and environment; and (3) in the scope of “Theories of Garden Design” from a designing point of view by studying the techniques and vocabulary of garden design and gardens, and other types of landscapes.

Urban Open Space Planning | Challenging environmental planning to vitalize the nature of parks and open spaces

We approach the creation of the urban environment from the perspectives of park and open space planning and environmental management planning. To realize a city where nature and humans can coexist, we work on the basic theories, namely, the theory of and open space efficacies, the park and open space theory, the regional environment management theory, and planning techniques. Our research topics include studies on planning, schemes and technologies for conservation, utilization and restoration of park and open spaces in urban and rural areas, studies on open space environment assessment and planning methodologies using remote sensing and GIS technologies, studies on park and recreational planning and methods of management and operation, and studies on methods to create a residential environment rich in parks and open spaces.

Landscape Design | What type of environmental design can people most identify with? From the design concept to the skills

We approach environmental design from a landscape perspective. A design everyone can identify with has a certain sense of time/age and place/location. Our activities range from designing individual spaces such as parks, plazas, streets, and waterfronts to creating regional environments such as urban and rural areas where all the individual spaces amalgamate. We are eager to take initiatives including the introduction and testing of the latest techniques based on scientific design methods, simulation and analysis methods, and practical aspects of design work, etc.

Natural Environment Conservation Studies | Conserve and restore the natural environment and landscape from world heritage sites and national parks to cultural/agricultural landscape!

Taking an approach from the perspective of the art of planning as well as conservation of the natural environment, we examine the value of natural environments and landscapes such as the suburban natural environment, cultural landscape resources in rural areas like coppice woods, natural parks such as the national parks, and wilderness areas registered as world heritage sites. We then devise conservation measures and study the way and methods with which to deploy them. Hands-on fieldwork is our basic tool of action, and subjects of our research include the structure of people’s recognition of natural environment and landscapes, natural environment management and its operational methods, natural environment protection movements such as environment NPOs, and effects of environmental user education such as the interpretation and provision of educational software.

Tourism and Recreational Studies | Creating an attractive tourism area and investigating methods and effect of its use

Tourism and resort areas have a comprehensive range of functions: the natural environment as the foundation; the outdoor recreational facilities; and the recreational activities as well as rural planning and regional economic activities, etc. We investigate the ways in which to develop and improve resources and facilities through attractive natural scenery, cultural landscape and hot spring baths, methods of instruction and operation of recreational, sports, and other programs in the area, and various benefits the users may receive, all from a landscape architectural perspective.

Field of Landscape Resources and Plants

Landscape Dendrology | Science and application of environment-shaping trees

Landscaping is the pursuit of comfort and beauty using plants as an essential structural factor. Among plants, large trees with a long lifespan make considerable contribution to environmental control with their physiological, ecological, and morphological properties. Furthermore, the trees in landscaped spaces are also required to contribute to the view, in other words, the aesthetic factor. On the other hand, a landscaped space often fosters poor environmental conditions for the growth of trees. To pursue the comfort and beauty demanded by the people under these poor conditions, a complete understanding of each tree’s attributes and what is necessary for sufficient protection and management are crucial. From this position, our laboratory aims to achieve a multifaceted examination and understanding of the characteristics, functions, and roles of different tree species for landscaping.

Landscape Ecology | Landscaped spaces from an ecological perspective

Our laboratory takes a broad view of landscaped spaces, including rural regions, and studies the relationship between the plants and their growth environment from an Applied Ecological perspective. Specific research topics include individual interaction among landscaping plants, historical life strategies of wild plants and conservation of their habitats, evaluation of urban green open space vegetation and its restoration, and conservation of biological diversity in rural area landscapes. Through these research studies, we aim to establish a management method for landscaped spaces based on ecological principles.

Landscaping Ground Covers | Science of groundcover plants to create a green environment

We study lawns and other groundcover plants to conduct a scientific investigation of their growth, growth environmental factors, and morphology. We also study the relationship between plants and planting management. In addition to these groundwork studies, we research the construction and management of groundcover plantations such as the sport turf on golf courses and football grounds, parks and other open spaces, as well as look at the functions and growth properties of the Oryzaeae grass plant species in drylands and deserts.

Urban Green Technology | Technological development of flowers and greenery to enrich the city

We conduct technological research and development for establishing vegetation, greens and flowers, in otherwise sterile urban spaces, and convert these areas into moist and comfortable open spaces. We also study the importance of their roles in the city. The urban open spaces found in places such as stretches of highway, building rooftops, indoor building spaces, and river or sea waterfronts tend to be poor growing environments for plants. Our laboratory studies the (1) growth potentials of plants under poor environmental conditions; (2) the technological development to enable healthy growth of plants in various urban open spaces; and (3) the functions of flowers and greenery, and environmental enhancement (restoration) effects by plants as the basis for advancing urban greening; and so on.

Field of Landscape Construction and Engineering

Landscape Engineering | Aim to become a Landscape Engineer.

Although the targeting field of lands such as garden, park, etc. is wide-ranged, it can be said also as the space created by landscape construction technology. Construction of the landscape which is expected to be beautiful and comfortable from urban parks and open spaces to the highway which travels throughout islands of Japan, those are studied by engineering approaches. The landscape engineering seriously considers the investigation with outdoor field, analyzes various informations, and manipulates the technology of CAD in development research of planning technique and management technique. Moreover, landscape is investigated and analyzes metrically, in order to clarify those structures.

Landscape Materials Studies | Seeking materials and construction technology for a beautiful landscape

In order to create beautiful and comfortable lands by landscape construction technology, fine consideration of selection of the material of various facilities are essential. Focusing on the stone and wood materials, processing methodology and utilization methodology of those materials are researched. The stage of the landscape construction carried out making full use of various materials is very important, and its demand to the engineer is high. The system of landscape construction technology is studied. In addition, surveying is the technology which becomes the fundamental in constructive field, however, it applies and develops photogrammetry technology, researches the construction method of landscape.
