Dean's Message

Center for Tackling and Innovating Global Food, Agricultural, Environmental, Resource and Energy Problems

MONMA Toshiyuki, Ph. D.
Dean, Graduate School of Agriculture

The Graduate School of Agriculture, Tokyo University of Agriculture, aims at developing scientific theories and technologies, as well as human resources who support them, required for tackling global agricultural, food, environmental, health, resource and energy problems, which are facing humankind. To serve this mission of Tokyo University of Agriculture, our Graduate School bases its research and education on new practical science, which leads students to develop keen sensitivity to problems, acquire basic and scientific knowledge and skills, and address difficult problems through innovative means.

The Graduate School of Agriculture provides Master's and Doctoral programs founded on four undergraduate faculties and twelve departments. As a comprehensive agricultural and biological graduate school, it responds to a wide variety of education and research needs, providing diverse majors, such as molecular biology and basic agricultural science, which support agriculture; fermentation science and food and nutritional science, which support food and health; majors pertaining to the environment that support the survival of humankind such as forests, farmlands and living space; majors that tackle food problems and difficulties in developing countries through social science and technological development; and majors that help mid-career workers receive academic instructions to formulate doctoral dissertations. In addition for this year, as part of the Master's program a major aimed at elucidating the healing processes for flora and fauna has been added.

The Only Bioindustrial Research Center in Japan, Combining Production and Utilization of Biological Resources with Industrial Management

OHYAMA Tohru, Ph. D.
Dean, Graduate School of Bio-Industry

In April 2010, in addition to the four such departments within the Faculty of Bioindustry (undergraduate), our Graduate School of Bioindustry, the only such school in Japan, has introduced a Master's program with majors in Bioproduction, Aqua Bioscience and Industry, Food Science and technology and Business Science together with a Doctoral program with a major in Bioindustry. In these programs research and education will be performed in the fields of biological resource production and its applications for both land and aquatic systems, food processing and industrial management. The Okhotsk district includes Shiretoko Peninsula, which has been inscribed on the World Heritage List. This district is a major food crop production base in Japan, as well as a sanctuary that offers an ecosystem of wild fauna and flora, rich aquatic resources, and other materials for biological resource studies.

Aiming for sustainable development of bioindustry, our graduate school encourages project studies and as an advanced university research center seeks to expand and diversify the bio-industry study domain, and promote collaboration with research institutions in Japan and other countries. We at the Graduate School of Bioindustry apply practical science as the tradition of Tokyo University of Agriculture, and pursue the development of human resources who can contribute to the international and local communities through their broad knowledge and global perspective.
