International Students Summit ( ISS )

Communique of the 4th International Students Summit

In recent decades, the world has faced problems such as rapidly increasing populations, poverty and environmental degradation. We students have gathered to discuss global issues and possible solutions to food, agricultural and environmental problems in this new century. In particular, we have focused on "Promoting global sustainability through the increased knowledge of agricultural systems: Case studies and students' roles". The participants from 20 universities in 20 countries and area have agreed upon the following statements, which we publicly announce:

  • Sustainable agriculture must balance environmental conservation and productivity, which can be achieved through both modern and traditional agricultural systems. As students of agriculture-related sciences, we should strive to find a proper balance between both systems in a manner that best promotes global agricultural sustainability.
  • As current students and leaders in our field, we need to act as a bridge between producers and consumers, providing education to both groups to increase their knowledge of agricultural systems. In addition, we must continuously work to educate the next generation in order to enhance their knowledge of, and interest in the field of agriculture.
  • It is our responsibility to promote food safety and security through sustainable agriculture in our communities. We believe sharing knowledge and experiences with our counterparts from around the world through a global student’s network is one way to help achieve this goal.
  • We believe that taking part in the student's groups will aid in promoting agricultural sustainability and food safety. We strongly encourage all participating universities to be connected in the International Students Forum’s network.

We, the students, thank the Tokyo University of Agriculture for organizing this 4th International Students Summit held on the 25th and 26th of November, 2004.
